looks to be some sort of dried berry- really, really old.... or maybe I
take too many botany classes

I enjoyed your responses.  This was a toughie, and it is to everyone's credit that most of you placed this item in the plant kingdom.   I have to admit I thought there were some sort of square-stemmed mushroom when I photographed them in their box at a Chinese market.  They are, in fact, dried persimmons,
