Thanks to each of you for sending in your guess.

I especially enjoyed the range of sizes, the largest guess was elephant, and the smallest was baby turtle.  To be fair, some of the guesses were probably made without clicking on the image to look at the larger view.  The "baby rhino" and "hippo" guesses make perfect sense if you just look at the small version of the picture.   I have changed the web page to clue people in more.

I'm including names and last initial this time.
Please email me if you'd like me to change anything about your answer.

At first I was going to say its a baby parrot half submerged in water, but
on closer inspection, I'd say its a baby rhino.

Based on the water and the type of eye, I'd say it's some sort of
octopus.

At first it looks like a really ugly parrot with a bad case of molt taking a
bath. But I'll guess that it's a [macro shot of a small] snapping turtle!

The reason I guessed a macro shot, was the surface tension on the water
sticking to his head made it look like a close up. But hey, they probably
need to change the water in his bowl ;-)

Based on the eye, the water refractions, and what looks like shell under the
water, (it's probably a macro shot too)... I'd estimate the little guy is
probably 6-8 inches in length and you keep him in a 10 gallon terrarium.
I'll but the cat can watch him for hours ;-)

BTW, this is a very cool site, I've bookmarked it... looking forward to
getting stumped!

It is a species of turtle from the looks of it. Beaked mouth and you can see
part of the plastron under the water.

Mike, Your weird animal looks like a turtle head!

The image is of a very large, (at least 100 lb / 50 kg) snapping turtle.  He / she lives in the Komoda Dragon exhibit area in the Denver Zoo.   This image was taken in late November, 2000.  The camera was a Nikon CoolPix 990 at a distance of about three feet, through the glass of the animal's enclosure.
