CF Card Timings

These tests used a Nikon CoolPix 990, firmware v1.1, in manual mode.  For these tests, the shutter pressed halfway to eliminate the pre-focus delay, and timing accuracy is plus or minus a few tenths of a second.

CompactFlash Card Type Model Number and Purchase Date Tiff (HI quality)
transfer time
(from shutter beep to end of hourglass)
Jpeg (Fine Quality)
transfer time
Mr. Flash 128 MB P/N FC128, August 2001

45.0 seconds

3.3 seconds
Lexar 8x, 16 MB July 2000 (w/ camera)

30.6 seconds

3.4 seconds
Sandisk 64 MB July 2000

51.3 seconds

3.4 seconds
Viking 128 MB June 2001

29.8 seconds

3.4 seconds

Conclusion: 99.9 percent of my images are jpeg fine quality, so for me there is no significant difference in transfer time for ordinary use.  But for the handful of tiff files I do each year,  I'll reach for the Viking card.
